Let’s talk about this article (you’ve probably seen it): “Enough with the Ugly Cakes.”

I’m late to the convo, but I had feelings. I sent a fiery text to my partner the second I read it, and here’s the gist:

This writer talks about ordering a birthday cake and being shocked that custom cakes cost $200–$300. From there, she calls these cakes “monstrosities,” makes a bunch of weirdly bitter observations about form over function, and then casually admits that she tried to make one herself and it sucked.

Cool.

Now listen, I’ll give her one thing: a lot of folks are out here making cakes that look cool but taste...not great. Heavy batters. Tooth-aching sweetness. Bad icing texture. No balance of flavor. That’s real. But that doesn’t mean we get to drag a whole genre of artists just because you don’t get it.

This piece could’ve been thoughtful. It could’ve been curious. Instead it just dunked on the work of (mostly female) small business owners who turned pandemic isolation into something vibrant, personal, and joyful. And for what? A hot take?

So here’s mine:
You don’t have to like ugly cakes. You don’t even have to order one. But to publicly belittle the labor, talent, and spirit it takes to dream, build, and sell something that didn’t exist before, especially as someone with a platform and a pen, is just lazy. You say you write for a living? Then you know how many hours of unseen work it takes to make one piece hit.

Same goes for cakes.
And I hope one day you try a Party Girl monstrosity, ugly and all. You’ll taste the intention in every bite.
